Year 3 Class 11 Newsletter 10th September 2018

Date: 9th Sep 2018 @ 6:43pm

Dear Parents,

What a fantastic first week back in school.  The children have made a great start and I've been so impressed with their excitement and enthusiasm - long may it continue!

We started the week with a get to know you and looked at our first RE topic - The Christian Family.  The children spoke beautifully about their wonderful families and how it feels to have God looking after us in one big family.  We used water colours to finish off our first piece of RE work.

During maths we looked at place value and discovered that it is much easier to group things in tens and then count them up instead of trying to keep track counting in ones.  The children will continue their learning this week when we look at numbers to 1000.

The children worked hard on their spellings this week and should be congratulated for their efforts in such a short time.  A reminder that spellings will come home on a Monday and will be tested each week on a Friday.  Spelling is such and important skill and we must make sure we're working hard in school and at home.  Thank you for your support with this.

During English we read I'll take you to Mrs Cole by Nigel Gray and the children LOVED it!  They laughed and were full of excitement when discussing the characters and story.  We wrote our descriptive piece based on a picture of a tree, interviewed certain characters, produced freeze frames and brain stormed so many great pieces of descriptive phrases.  This week we will be learning all about expanded noun phrases, writing another description and looking at what makes a great descriptive piece of writing.

During topic we learned all about the different parts of our world and used atlases to find the equator and other features of our planet.  The children even labelled the inner parts of the earth and learned about what it is like beneath our feet.  This week we will learn all about volcanoes and how they are formed.

We enjoyed our first computing session this week when the children have started to learn how to code computers!  Over the coming weeks I'll be teaching the children the basics of computer coding and hopefully they will be inspired to create their own games in the future!

We begin our guitar tuition this week and the children are so very excited.  It's such a privilege to be able to learn an instrument and every child will have their own guitar to practise with each week. You'll be invited in a few times a year to see the children play too!

Homework should come home on Friday.  There will be two books (one maths, one spelling and grammar SPAG) coming home and information inside on which pages the children need to complete.  Both these books are due in on the following Wednesday.

The children will also be working on their times tables each week and will have a short challenge each Friday to give them something to aim for.  They compete against themselves after practising all week in class.  If you can help at home, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who had sent their child in with the correct PE kit on Friday.  We have PE every Wednesday and Friday and the children will need the kit on both those days.

I'm really looking forward to the year ahead with your children and I know it's going to be a great year!

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Chris Waterworth
