Class 19 Year 6 2019 - 2020

Mrs Harding

Welcome to Class 19's page!

Welcome to Year 6! We hope that you are all feeling refreshed and ready to begin the final year of your journey here at St Mary's. We have lots of exciting things planned ahead of us this half-term which will of course include our residential to Robinwood on Wednesday 11th September.

Our key text this half-term will be 'The Land of Neverbelieve' by Norman Messenger. We will explore the island and begin to discover the many wonderful and exotic creatures that can be encountered there. This will lead us on to writing a set of instructions about how to care for one of them. Some of the key skills and features that we will look to include and develop will include:

  • The use of imperative verbs
  • Conjunctions to sequence
  • Carefully chosen adverbs
  • Parenthesis for extra information
  • Bullet points and colons for lists

Our first units of work in Maths we will be focusing on place value and number. We will be able to read, write, order, compare and determine the value of numbers up to 10,000,000. This will lead us on to the rounding of numbers to required degrees of accuracy and the use of negative numbers in context. We will continue to work on rapid recall of multiplication facts to 12 x 12 and will develop both mental and written arithmetic methods.

R.E - Kingdom of God

Throughout this topic the children will develop their knowledge and understanding of God's Kingdom. They will learn that everyone is invited into the Kingdom of God and will consider how they can share this good news with others and reflect upon this.

Throughout our Science unit 'The Animal Kingdom' we will describe how living things are grouped according to common characteristics and based on their similarities and differences. We will learn the key vocabulary associated with living things and their habitats and will plan different types of scientific enquiries in order to answer questions.

We will learn about the achievements of one of the earliest civilisations - Ancient Egypt. We will be thinking about what life would have been like in Egypt during this time using sources of evidence that have been left behind. This will lead us on to an understanding and appreciation of how some of this evidence can still be seen in Egypt today.

If you require any more information in relation to our learning this half term then please refer to the 'Curriculum Map' which is attached as a link within this page.

As always, thank you for your continued level of support. If you require any further information, including important calendar dates, then please refer to the curriculum map which can be downloaded directly from this page.

I very much look forward to getting to know you all during the course of this half-term!

Mrs Harding.
