Class 20 Year 6 2019 - 2020

Mrs MacPherson

Welcome to Class 20's page!

Welcome back to school! We hope that you have had a relaxed and enjoyable break and are now ready to begin another busy half-term in Year 6.

Our key text this half-term will be 'Secrets of a Sun King' by Emma Carroll. We will use the text as a link to our History topic 'Ancient Egypt' and will develop our writing skills through both narrative and journalistic writing. We will continue to build upon our knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar rules throughout the units in order to support us in proofreading and editing our writing in order to improve it.

In our first maths unit this half-term we will be developing our understanding of fractions and how to calculate with them. Some of the key skills we will begin to look at will include:

- Simplifying fractions

- Comparing and ordering fractions

- Using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to calculate fractions.

- Problem solving using fractions.

We will continue to work on rapid recall of multiplication facts to 12 x 12  (remember to practise your recall of times tables facts using!) In addition to this, we will continue to develop both mental and written arithmetic methods.

R.E - Justice

Throughout this topic we will gain an understanding about justice and will learn how a belief in both justice and peace can shape the way that someone lives. Through the topic, we will learn that Oscar Romero's decisions were made because of his belief in justice and fairness for the poor. We will look closely at the work achieved by charities such as CAFOD and will make links to religious teachings about justice and peace.

We will be building upon our prior learning this half-term to focus on the human circulatory system. We will learn to identify its main parts whilst describing the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. Alongside this, we will recognise the impact of our diet, exercise and lifestyle on the way in which our bodies function.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to learn about the achievements of one of the earliest civilisations - Ancient Egypt. We will be thinking about what life would have been like in Egypt during this time using sources of evidence that have been left behind. This will lead us on to an understanding and appreciation of how some of this evidence can still be seen in Egypt today.

If you require any more information in relation to our learning this half term, then please refer to the 'Curriculum Map' which is attached as a link within this page.

As always, thank you for your continued level of support. If you require any further information, including important calendar dates, then please refer to the curriculum map which can be downloaded directly from this page.

I very much look forward to enjoying another exciting half-term with you all!

Mrs MacPherson.
