Happy New Year and welcome back to school! We hope that you are refreshed and ready to begin another busy term in Year 6.

English

This half term we will develop our writing skills based on our Egyptian topic work as well as other areas of interest. We will be looking to expand narrative and will write stories containing flashbacks. Our non-fiction genres will include biographies and explanation texts.

We will continue to develop our understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar in order to both develop our writing skills and prepare for the SATs tests in May.

Maths

We will begin this half term by developing and applying an understanding of fractions through calculations, reasoning and problem solving activities. Following this, we will then explore and make links between decimals and percentages and will apply our understanding by converting and finding equivalents.

Towards the end of the half term we will introduce Algebra and will develop an understanding through the use of simple formulae, generating and describing linear number sequences and expressing missing number problems algebraically.

We will also continue to develop our written and mental arithmetic skills as well as improving rapid recall of multiplication facts to 12 x 12.

R.E

Our topic this term will be 'Exploring the Mass'. We will develop an awareness and understanding of how Jesus is the bread of life and how He has made a New Covenant with us. We will learn about the significance of the different parts of Mass - the beginning, the Offertory, the Consecration and Holy Communion. We will also learn that the Eucharist is the source and the summit of life and the Catholic faith.

Topic

We will be continuing this half term with our learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Our work will take us back in time to North Africa where will we meet the Pharaohs, find out about Egyptian gods, study hieroglyphs and learn about mummification! In addition, we will also be introducing our new Science topic - 'Light'. During this unit we will develop an understanding of how light travels and will use these ideas to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.
