Class 5 Year 1 2019 - 2020

Mrs Cosby

Mrs Parkinson

We hope that you have all had a happy and restful week. The children have all settled well into the daily routines of year 1 and we are looking forward to this busy new half term together.

Our RE topic is: Mary Our Mother – What makes someone special?

In this topic we learn about the events leading up to the Birth of Jesus, including the Annunciation and the Visitation. We also find out why Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. We retell the Christmas story and learn how the Good News of Jesus’s birth was spread.

Our curriculum work will have a history focus this half term. We will investigate how toys have changed over time and will learn about the poppy and why it is used to signify Remembrance day. We will also continue to learn to play the recorder. Remember to keep practising at home!

In English our Talk for Writing text will be ‘The Little Red Hen’. Over the half term we will learn to expand our sentences by using 'and'; use capital letters and question marks correctly; and use the suffix -ing. We will also continue to learn to write using the cursive style.

In Maths we will represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10. We will read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs. We will also learn to name 2d and 3d shapes and will begin to talk about their properties.

The children will continue to have access to a wide range of colour banded books which they can change within the classroom as often as they like. The children will read at least once each week with a teacher as part of a guided read. During this time we will practise key skills to help develop fluency and a note will be made in their diary. It is essential that the children also read at least three times per week at home as this is the time when they can practise the skills they have been taught. Please ensure any reading is recorded in their reading diaries as the children are rewarded with house points for reading at home.

Our updated curriculum map is available on the website, which will give further information on all of the above.

Many thanks in anticipation of all your support and hard work.

Mrs Cosby, Mrs Parkinson and Mrs Kenny.
