Class 6 Year 1 2019 - 2020

Miss Bond

Welcome back Class 6

I hope that you have all had a lovely and restful half term break! We had a great first half term in Class 6 and Year 1 and I hope you are all ready and looking forward to another exciting half term!

In English this half term, we will begin to look at some exciting new traditional tales stories such as 'The Little Red Hen' and keep using these stories to help us to learn important skills in our writing. We will continue looking at how to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops when we write sentences. We will also start to try and use 'and' to expand and extend our sentences.

In Maths this half term we will be looking at counting and writing numbers to 20. We will be looking at reading writing and ordering numbers to 20. We will be idetifying one more and one less of a given number. We will also be continuing to look at number bonds and looking at using number lines. We will begin to read, write and look at number statements with subtractions signs.

Our curriculum focus this half term will be history. We will begin our unit 'Toys' by looking at the history of toys and how toys have changed over time and how they have changed since our parents and grandparents were children! We will have lots of fun exploring old toys and talking about what toys we love to play with in Class 6!

In our RE lessons, our topic this half term is 'Mary, Mother of God' where we will explore the events leading up to the Birth of Jesus. We will explore key events such as the Visitation and the Annuciation and think about why Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. We end with us retelling the Christmas story and how the Good News of the Birth of Jesus was shared.

The children will continue to have access to a wide range of colour banded books which they can choose and change within the classroom when they need a new book. Please make sure that your child is reading every day and that any reading completed at home is recorded in their reading diaries.

PE lessons will be on a Tuesday afternoon, please make sure your child has a PE kit (indoor and outdoor) in school. Homework will be given out in Homework books on a Friday and to be returned by Wednesday.

Our curriculum map is available on the class page below, which will give further information on all of our topics and objectives for this half term.

I am looking forward to this exciting new half term in Year 1!

Many thanks for your continued support.
