Class 6 Year 1 2018 - 2019

Miss Bond

Welcome to our Class 6 Home page! smiley

Welcome to Year 1! We hope that you have all had a happy and restful Summer holiday and are looking forward to this new term in Year 1. We hope that you are all excited to be joining Year 1 and will enjoy the new challenges ahead.

In English we will be reading some stories with familiar settings. We will explore the stories 'Whatever next' and 'Feather in my pocket'. Using these stories we will be labelling pictures and writing captions to match. We will explore the stories and do our own retells. We will practise forming upper and lower case letters and use capital letters for names and to start sentences. We will write our own story on forest animals.

In Maths we will learn to count to ten, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number. We will count, read and write numbers to 10 in both numerals and words. Given a number, the children will  identify one more or one less. They will identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least. They will represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10. We will read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and equals (=) signs, and we will add and subtract one digit numbers to 10, including zero.

Our first RE topic is God's Great Plan. In this topic the children will become aware of the beauty of God’s World and understand the story of creation. They will think about our responsibility to look after our World and know that God sent the Angel Gabriel to ask Mary to be the mother of his son. The children will understand that Mary is our mother too.

Our topic is ‘My World and I’ and through this we learn about human and animal body parts and the senses. Shortly before half term we will be taking a trip to Stockley Farm as part of this topic.

The children will have access to a wide range of colour banded books which they can choose and change within the classroom when they need a new book. We will read at least once each week as part of a guided reading session. During this time we will practise key skills to help develop fluency and a note will be made in their diary. Please make sure that your child is reading every day and that any reading completed at home is recorded in their reading diaries.

PE lessons will be on a Tuesday afternoon, please make sure your child has a PE kit (indoor and outdoor) in school. Homework will be given out in Homework books on a Friday and to be returned by Wednesday.

Class 6s' updated curriculum map is available on our class page below, which will give further information on all of the above.

I am looking forward to this wonderful first half term in year 1 and all the excting times ahead.

Many thanks in anticipation of all your support and hard work.

Miss Bond and Mrs Owen
