Topics This Term

We will be exploring the history of Rome and the children will be travelling back through time to explore where the Romans came from, how people lived in Roman times in the Roman empire and how Rome influenced our own world today. We will be baking to help develop our food preparation skills and in our Science lessons we will be learning all about nutrition, muscles and our skeleton. In Computing, the children will learn about spreadsheets and how we can organise and interpret data using graphs. We will continue our professional guitar tuition, which all the children are enjoying greatly and look forward to , hopefully, performing for you near the end of the half term. During our PSHE sessions, taught by Mrs Kararvia, the children will learn what makes up life in Britain and begin to appreciate the range of national, regional, religous and ethnic identities in the UK. French lessons will also continue under the tuteladge of Madame Davies.

Our Spring unit is ‘The Sacrament of Reconciliation’ and in this unit we look at the Great Commandment and how we sometimes make the wrong choices and how to make those right. We will look at the story of Zacchaeus and learn from his example and we will read the story of The Lost Sheep and learn that God always loves us, no matter what.

Physical Education

PE kit must be in school each day and taken home for a wash at holiday time. This must be the uniform St Mary’s PE kit. Please include both indoor and outdoor kit . Trainers are much better than black pumps but please check that they fit. Jogging bottoms are also requested especially now that the weather is becoming colder. The regulation PE kit is available from
Our PE day is Tuesday but we will also complete the golden mile when the weather allows on a different day. During PE this term, we will create a gymnastics routine including jumps, rolls and balances.

Guided reading is completed in class at the start of each day. This is when we explore a text as a class and develop the children’s comprehension and text analysis skills. In addition to this it is expected that children read between 2-3 times per week with an adult at home. Please send me a message on Class Dojo to tell me that this has been done and I will give Dojo points everytime I receive a message! Children may change their reading books when ever they need to. They must remember to do this, independently, at the start or end of the school day.

We continue our exploration of descriptive writing with a cautious trip through the back of a wardrobe and venture into the land of Narnia. When they have arrived, it will be the children’s job to describe the world to their readers. We will build on the skills learned earlier in the year and really begin to choose language carefully to bring Narnia to life!

After spending time in Narnia, the children will have met many strange and wonderful creatures from fauns, to centaurs and talking beavers! The children will have the opportunity to create their own Narnia character and write a report about them.

We will continue to work through our spelling program on a weekly basis and the children will bring new spelling words home each Monday to learn for a test each Friday. The format of the test will change slightly this term as we will be including a dictation sentence in it as well. This covers the Year 3 objective to write a simple dictated sentence.

Multiplication and Division
During this half term, we will be comparing multiplication and division statements and then investigating related facts too. The children will learn how to multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number and then how to divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. Finally, the children will use all their learning to solve problems across a series of lessons.

We will start this unit and then complete after half term. The children will learn to add and subtract amounts of money, give change, using bot £ and p in practical contexts.
We will also continue our weekly times table test on a Friday too. This will be set on certain tables each week.

Please continue to access Times Table Rock Stars regularly to practise. This is vital to ensure their progress. I will be looking at the children’s progress in times tables through this website, only, this term.
